*Youth Book Club: Book Reviews by Ian Duff

Pendragon: The Merchant of Death by D.J. MacHale
This is the first book in a series of fantasy books about Bobby Pendragon. Bobby, a fourteen year old boy, finds out he is a Traveler, a person who magically travels to different territories and worlds. He goes to Dendoron to help the Milago revolt against the Kagen, the ruling family. He is accompanied by Osa and Loor, also Travelers, and his Uncle Press. Saint Dane, a Traveler turned bad, wants to rule all of Halla, or possibly everything and everyone. Will Bobby succeed?

Pendragon: The Lost City of Faar by D.J. MacHale
This is the second book in the Pendragon series. Bobby Pendragon, a Traveler, finds himself in Clorrel trying to save it from a civil war.

I liked both books a lot. There is a lot of action. People fight and have adventures, and a few people die. I would give them both an “A”. If you like these books, you might also like the "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" series by Kathryn Lasky, about an owl who is kidnapped from his family by an evil group of owls who want to rule the world.

Wondering if the plant that's growing in your yard is a "good" plant or a "bad" plant? Karen Syverson has put together an amazing display of invasive plants and information on how they effect native vegetation.

Invasive plants on display include Dame's Rocket, Japanese Barberry, Black Locust, Honeysuckle, plus Reed Canary Grass and Purple Loosestrife. She also highlights information from Invasive Plants of Wisconsin - www.ipaw.org.

Karen also maintains the Native Garden in the front of the library and is a member and Past President of the Fox Valley Area Chapter of Wild Ones. Wild Ones "promotes environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through preservation of native plant communities."

Leon-Saxeville Library was the proud recepient of a Natural Landscaping Grant from Wild Ones.

Are you interested in showcasing your collection at the library? Do you have a special talent or hobby you would like to display for others? We're putting together a list of people who are willing to bring their “personal favorites” sometime during 2008. The display usually stays in the locked display case for the month. If you're interested, see the Library Director and she’ll get you signed up!

At planting, and...

When the snow melts, work begins on the garden. We’ll be seeding the grassy area and cleaning up the planted area and putting in additional plants. Hopefully the stepping-stones survived the winter. If not, we’ll be making more of them.

The Friends of the Leon-Saxeville Library was the recipient of a "Landscaping for Tomorrow" Grant from the Fox Valley Area Chapter of The Wild Ones organization.
